Scripture Reading: Romans 4:4-5 (NIV)
"Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness."
Reflection:
In a world that emphasizes the value of hard work and earning what we get, the message of Romans 4:4-5 is radical. Paul explains that righteousness before God cannot be earned by our works or effort—it’s a gift of grace given freely to those who trust in Him.
The idea that our salvation is a gift, not something we can achieve or deserve, can be difficult for us to fully grasp. We often find ourselves trying to earn God’s favor by doing good works, fulfilling religious duties, or meeting certain standards. However, in these verses, Paul makes it clear that righteousness is not a reward for our efforts. It is the result of faith in the God who justifies the ungodly.
Abraham, whom Paul uses as an example, was not considered righteous because of anything he did but because of his unwavering faith in God’s promise. His trust in God, despite impossible circumstances, was the reason God credited righteousness to him. Similarly, we are made right with God not by our actions but by trusting in Jesus Christ, who accomplished all that was necessary for our salvation through His death and resurrection.
Application:
Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Are there areas where you’re trying to earn God’s approval through your actions or striving to prove yourself worthy? This passage invites us to rest in the truth that righteousness is not something we can earn but is freely given to those who trust in Jesus.
Practical Steps:
- Spend time today focusing on God’s grace. Reflect on the truth that your salvation is a gift.
- Let go of the pressure to “earn” your place with God through effort and embrace the freedom that comes from faith in His grace.
- Praise God for His love and mercy that covers you, regardless of your ability to "earn" anything.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of grace that makes me righteous in Your eyes. I confess that at times I try to earn Your approval through my efforts, but today I choose to rest in the assurance that it is my faith in You that counts. Help me to trust You more fully and to live in the freedom of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
