Lenten Devotional -day 18
Scripture Readings:
- Isaiah 7:10-14 – The Lord gives a sign: "The virgin will conceive and bear a son."
- Psalm 40:5-11 – A heart that delights in God's will.
- Luke 1:26-38 – Mary’s response to the angel: “Let it be to me according to your word.”
Reflection
As we journey through this Lenten season, the call to surrender and trust in God echoes through today’s scriptures. The prophecy in Isaiah speaks of a miraculous sign – a virgin conceiving and giving birth to Emmanuel, "God with us." This sign reminds us that God always fulfills His promises, even when they seem impossible by human standards.
Psalm 40 reflects a heart that finds joy in doing God’s will, not just offering sacrifices, but surrendering in obedience. This aligns perfectly with the posture of Lent – not just external fasting, but an inner transformation where our hearts truly seek to please God.
In Luke’s gospel, we see the perfect response of surrender. When the angel Gabriel brought the news to Mary, her life was about to change forever. Yet, instead of fear or resistance, she embraced God’s will with the words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Mary’s response is a model for us in this Lenten season – a heart fully yielded to God’s plan.
Lenten Application
-
Surrender to God's Will – Like Mary, let us say “yes” to God, even when we don’t fully understand His plans. Lent is a time to let go of our own desires and embrace God's purpose for our lives.
-
Trust in God’s Promises – Just as Isaiah prophesied Emmanuel and it was fulfilled in Christ, we can trust that God’s promises over our lives will come to pass in His perfect time.
-
Move Beyond Ritual to Relationship – Psalm 40 teaches that God desires not just outward sacrifices but a heart that delights in Him. This season calls us to go beyond routine fasting to true intimacy with God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we walk through this Lenten season, help us to surrender completely to Your will. Like Mary, may we embrace Your plans with faith and obedience. Teach us to trust in Your promises, knowing that You are always faithful. Create in us a heart that delights in You, beyond mere religious observance. Let our lives reflect true devotion, preparing our hearts for the glory of Easter. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Stay steadfast, keep seeking, and may your Lenten journey be filled with renewed faith and deeper surrender. Emmanuel, God is with us!
