Laughing at the Impossible

Scripture Focus: Genesis 18:12-14

“So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’” – Genesis 18:12

Devotional

It’s easy to understand why Sarah laughed. The promise of a child when she was past childbearing age seemed ridiculous to her. Her laughter wasn’t the joyful sound of anticipation; it was the sound of disbelief. She had waited for years for a child and now, at the age of ninety, she had heard the most unimaginable news—she would bear a son. Her response was natural. It was not that she didn’t believe in God; she just couldn’t fathom how it would happen.

God, however, wasn’t thrown off by Sarah’s laughter. In fact, He asked, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” This question wasn’t a rebuke, but a gentle reminder that God’s power is beyond what we can comprehend. He operates outside the limitations of time and circumstance. When it seems like there’s no way, God is still making a way.

We all have moments like Sarah, moments when God’s promises feel impossible. Whether it’s a financial breakthrough, healing, a relationship restored, or a long-awaited dream finally realized, we often laugh in disbelief. But God isn’t limited by what we see or understand. What seems impossible to us is an opportunity for God to show His greatness.

Consider a seed planted in the ground. It must die before it grows. Likewise, when we feel like all hope is gone, we are in the perfect place for God to show up. Trusting God in the face of the impossible isn’t about ignoring our circumstances; it’s about believing that God’s ability is greater than what we face. His timing is perfect, and His plans are always better than ours.

When Sarah held her newborn son in her arms, she laughed again—not with doubt, but with joy. Her laughter had been transformed from one of skepticism to one of celebration. The impossible had become possible.

Today, I encourage you to take God at His word. When He promises something, He will bring it to pass. It might not look how or when you expect, but it will happen. God is not limited by your age, your situation, or your doubts. He is able to do exceedingly abundantly more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

So, when life feels impossible, remember: Nothing is too hard for God.
