Naming the Chains Before Breaking Them

Scripture Focus: Luke 8:26–39, verse 30

“Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘Legion,’ he replied, because many demons had gone into him.”

Devotional:

Let’s be honest. Many of us are fighting battles we can’t quite explain. We feel stuck, off-balance, or overwhelmed—but we don’t always know why. Sometimes, we pray. Sometimes, we press on. But sometimes, we don’t even know what we’re up against. That’s why discernment is so important in spiritual warfare.

When Jesus crossed the lake and met the man from the tombs, He didn’t just cast out the evil spirits immediately. He started with a question:
“What is your name?”

At first glance, that question may seem strange. Jesus already knew what was tormenting the man. But He asked anyway. Why? Because there is power in naming what’s been oppressing you. You can’t confront what you won’t identify. You can’t break what you won’t acknowledge. Jesus wasn’t confused—He was being intentional.

The man answered, “Legion,” not because that was his real name, but because that was the name of the torment he carried. “Legion” represented the mess. It exposed the root of the issue. Jesus forced it into the light. And once it was exposed, it lost its grip.

Why This Matters for Us

We all have “legions” trying to name us—fear, trauma, addiction, depression, shame, bitterness. But we need to pause and ask ourselves:
Have I named what’s been controlling me?

When we skip discernment, we often fight the wrong battles. We lash out at people, blame our background, or get stuck in cycles because we haven’t sat still long enough to hear God reveal the real issue.

Discernment is more than good instincts. It’s spiritual sensitivity. It’s prayerfully asking, “God, what is the root here? What am I really fighting?” It’s letting the Holy Spirit shine a light on the spiritual cause behind the physical symptoms.

Practical Discernment Checkpoints

  • Pause before reacting. Not every storm is what it seems.
  • Ask God for insight. He reveals what’s hidden (Daniel 2:22).
  • Examine patterns. Recurring struggles often point to a deeper spiritual chain.
  • Use the Word as a mirror. Scripture will help you identify what's off.
  • Surround yourself with spiritually mature people. Sometimes others see what we can’t.

Prayer to Reflect

Lord Jesus, help me see beyond the surface. Teach me to discern the real enemy. I don’t want to fight blindly. Shine Your light into every hidden place in my heart. Show me what needs to be named, and give me the boldness to face it. I receive Your truth, and I walk in Your freedom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Final Encouragement

You are not your battle. You are not your past. You are not what tried to name you. Once Jesus steps in, you are known, restored, and made whole. The same man who once lived among tombs became a messenger of hope in his hometown.

So take courage. Ask the hard question. Name the chain. And by God’s grace—break it.
