Choosing Humility Over Self-Exaltation

Scripture Reference:

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” – Matthew 23:12 (NIV)

Definition of Humility

Humility is a heart posture that recognizes God as the source of all wisdom, strength, and success. It is not weakness or low self-worth, but the ability to acknowledge our dependence on God and to value others above ourselves (Philippians 2:3). Humility means putting God’s glory before personal recognition.

The Importance of Humility

  1. It aligns us with God’s will – God draws near to the humble but opposes the proud (James 4:6).
  2. It brings peace in relationships – humility creates space for forgiveness, patience, and unity.
  3. It opens the door to divine exaltation – when we humble ourselves, God lifts us up in His perfect time (1 Peter 5:6).
  4. It reflects Christ’s life – Jesus humbled Himself even to death on the cross (Philippians 2:5–8).

Barriers to Humility

  • Pride and Self-sufficiency: Thinking we can live without God.
  • Desire for Recognition: A culture of fame and self-promotion discourages humility.
  • Fear of Being Overlooked: Some resist humility because they fear being ignored or undervalued.
  • Comparison: Measuring ourselves against others fuels pride or insecurity.

Contemporary Examples of Humility

  • A leader who chooses to serve alongside their team rather than demand privilege.
  • Public figures who redirect praise to God, their teams, or mentors instead of basking in self-glory.
  • Quiet acts of service by parents, caregivers, and volunteers who give without seeking applause.
  • Young people who resist the urge to flaunt success on social media, choosing instead to live with gratitude and simplicity.

A Call to Reflection

Jesus’ teaching reminds us that true greatness in God’s Kingdom is not about climbing higher but bowing lower. To exalt ourselves is to set ourselves up for humiliation, but to choose humility is to open ourselves to God’s honor.

In today’s world, where self-promotion is celebrated, humility may feel costly. Yet it is the very path Christ walked and the one He calls us to follow. Let us desire to be humbled, allowing God to shape us, rather than chasing after titles and recognition that fade.

Prayer:
Lord, clothe me with humility. Remove pride from my heart and teach me to value others above myself. May I seek Your honor above all else. Amen.
