Scripture Reading: Numbers 12:1–13
Key Verse: “Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” — Numbers 12:8 (NIV)
Devotional
In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron speak out against Moses, questioning his authority and bringing up his Cushite wife. But beneath their words lies something deeper: jealousy. God had been using Moses in a mighty way, and rather than celebrate it, they challenged it publicly.
Their words weren’t just criticism. They were laced with pride and a subtle desire for recognition: “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” (v.2). This wasn’t just a family disagreement, it was rebellion against God's appointed authority.
God’s response was swift and direct. He defends Moses, calling him “faithful in all My house” and makes it clear that speaking against His chosen servant is no small offense. Miriam is struck with leprosy as a sign of judgment. Even then, Moses doesn’t retaliate. Instead, he intercedes for her healing with deep compassion.
This passage is a sobering reminder that words have weight. What we say and the motive behind it matters to God. Criticizing others, especially out of envy or pride, grieves Him and can bring painful consequences, not just to others but to ourselves.
Personal Application:
- Ask yourself: Are my words motivated by love, or by envy? Am I speaking to build others up, or to bring them down?
- Reflect on how you speak about leaders: pastors, bosses, friends. Are your words honoring or tearing down?
- Before you speak, pause and ask: Would I say this if the person were in the room? Would God be pleased with it?
Prayer:
Father, help me to guard my tongue and check my motives before I speak. Uproot any pride or envy in my heart, and teach me to celebrate others’ gifts. May my words be full of grace and truth, bringing healing not harm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
