The Pain Before the Glory

Scripture Reading: Matthew 17:22–23

“The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

Devotional

When Jesus told His disciples about His betrayal, suffering, and death, it shook them deeply. But notice—He also told them about His resurrection. The pain was certain, but so was the victory.

In life, pain often comes before breakthrough. Sometimes God allows us to face seasons that hurt, not to harm us, but to prepare us for the glory ahead.

Reflection

1. Pain Can Be Part of God’s Plan
The cross wasn’t a mistake—it was God’s pathway to salvation (Acts 2:23). In the same way, your current struggles may be shaping you for your calling.

2. Pain Has an Expiry Date
Jesus didn’t just predict His death—He promised His resurrection. Every trial has a “third day” when God will bring restoration (Psalm 30:5).

3. Glory Will Outweigh the Pain
Romans 8:18 assures us that our present suffering is nothing compared to the glory ahead. For Jesus, the joy of redeeming us outweighed the cross (Hebrews 12:2).

Contemporary Interpretation

Think of a student preparing for final exams—the late nights, the stress, the sacrifices. It’s exhausting, but the graduation day makes it worth it. Or consider a patient undergoing surgery—the pain is intense, but it brings healing and a fresh start.

Your situation may feel like “Friday,” but “Sunday” is coming. God’s plan always leads to resurrection moments, even when the road is paved with tears.

Encouragement to Hold On

When the weight feels too heavy, remember—God is not distant in your pain. Psalm 34:18 says He is close to the brokenhearted. Even when you don’t see it, He is working behind the scenes. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep walking forward.

Prayer

Lord, when my heart is heavy and the pain feels unending, help me remember that You are working all things for my good. Give me strength to endure and faith to trust Your timing. Amen.

Key Takeaway

The cross was not the end—it was the doorway to glory. Your pain is not final; it’s preparation for God’s promise. Hold on—your Sunday is coming.
