Counting the Cost of Discipleship

Scripture: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it” (Luke 14:28, NKJV).

DevIntroduction

The Christian journey is both a privilege and a responsibility. Jesus, in addressing the crowds, never sugar-coated what it means to follow Him. Instead, He made it clear that discipleship comes with a cost that must be carefully considered. In Luke 14:25–33, He challenges us to evaluate our priorities and be ready for full surrender.

Scriptural Explanation

  1. Discipleship Requires Undivided Loyalty

    • Luke 14:26 stresses that loyalty to Christ must surpass even our closest relationships. This isn’t hatred in a literal sense but a call to choose Christ above family, friends, and even self-interest (cf. Matthew 10:37).
  2. Carrying the Cross Daily

    • In Luke 14:27, Jesus demands that we carry our cross. The cross symbolizes death to self, sacrifice, and willingness to endure hardship for Christ’s sake (cf. Galatians 2:20).
  3. The Builder’s Lesson

    • Jesus likens discipleship to a builder planning to construct a tower (Luke 14:28–30). A wise builder counts the cost before laying the foundation. Likewise, discipleship requires planning, endurance, and commitment to finish the race (cf. 2 Timothy 4:7).
  4. The King’s Strategy

    • In Luke 14:31–32, Jesus compares discipleship to a king preparing for battle. Victory is not won by accident; it requires strategic commitment and total reliance on God’s strength (cf. Ephesians 6:10–11).
  5. Renouncing Possessions

    • Jesus concludes in Luke 14:33 that true discipleship means surrendering ownership of everything. Our possessions, ambitions, and very lives must be yielded to His Lordship (cf. Philippians 3:7–8).

Reflection

Counting the cost is not meant to discourage us but to prepare us for the realities of following Christ. Many begin with zeal but falter when challenges arise. Jesus reminds us that discipleship is not about half-hearted commitment but about wholehearted surrender.

To count the cost means:

  • Prioritizing Christ above comfort, family, and possessions.
  • Embracing trials as part of the journey.
  • Living daily with eternity in view.

The reward is far greater than the cost, for in losing our lives for Christ, we gain eternal life (cf. Matthew 16:25).

Practical Application

  1. Evaluate Your Priorities: Identify areas where worldly desires compete with your loyalty to Christ.
  2. Commit to Endurance: Don’t just start strong—pray for grace to finish well.
  3. Live Surrendered: Use your time, resources, and gifts as instruments for God’s glory.
  4. Prepare for Spiritual Battles: Clothe yourself daily in God’s armor (Ephesians 6:13–17).

Prayer

Lord Jesus, help me to truly count the cost of following You. Teach me to surrender all and place You above every desire, relationship, and possession. Strengthen me to carry my cross daily and endure until the end. May my life reflect the beauty and reward of true discipleship. Amen.
