Text: Luke 1:26-38
Introduction:
Life often presents us with unexpected moments where God calls us to step out of our comfort zones. In Luke 1:26-38, we see Mary, a young woman from Nazareth, chosen by God to play a pivotal role in His divine plan. Her response to this extraordinary call teaches us profound lessons about faith, obedience, and submission to God’s will.
1. God’s Call Comes with Divine Favor (vv. 26-30)
The angel Gabriel greets Mary, saying, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
God's call is not based on our qualifications but on His grace and purpose. Mary wasn’t wealthy or prominent, yet she was chosen.
God’s favor equips us to accomplish what He calls us to do. When He calls, He also empowers. Trust His favor over your fears.
Like Mary, many biblical figures—Moses, Gideon, and Jeremiah—were unsure of their ability, but God’s presence made the difference.
2. God’s Call Requires Faith in the Impossible (vv. 31-37)
Gabriel reveals that Mary will conceive the Messiah, a miraculous event beyond human understanding.
Mary’s question, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” is met with reassurance: “Nothing is impossible with God.”
God often calls us to tasks that seem impossible by human standards. Faith in His power enables us to say “yes” even when we don’t see the full picture.
Abraham believed God’s promise of a child despite his old age, demonstrating that faith transcends logic when God is involved.
3. God’s Call Demands Total Obedience (v. 38)
Mary’s response, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled,” reflects complete surrender.
She didn’t have all the answers, but her obedience paved the way for God’s redemptive plan through Christ.
Obedience to God’s call often requires sacrifice, but it leads to eternal rewards and impacts generations.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a theologian, once said, “When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.” Obedience may cost us, but it fulfills God’s purpose.
Conclusion:
Mary’s journey reminds us that embracing God’s call involves:
1. Trusting His favor.
2. Believing in His power to do the impossible.
3. Submitting to His will with obedience.
Call to Action:
What is God calling you to today? Like Mary, will you respond in faith and obedience, trusting that He will equip you for the journey? Let us surrender our fears and doubts, knowing that His plans are always good and perfect.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, thank You for calling us into Your divine purpose. Help us to respond with faith and obedience, trusting in Your power and favor. May our lives bring glory to You as we embrace Your call. Amen.
