Women in Ministry: Honoring Their Role

Scripture: “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.” — Romans 16:1-2 (NIV)

Devotional Message

The final chapter of Romans is often overlooked, yet it carries a powerful message about the role of women in ministry. Paul, a strong advocate for the gospel, takes time to recognize the contributions of several women who played vital roles in the early church.

Phoebe, whom Paul describes as a "servant" (Greek: diakonos), was entrusted with delivering the letter to the Roman church. She was not just a messenger; she was a leader, benefactor, and active worker in God’s kingdom. Priscilla, another woman mentioned, worked alongside her husband, Aquila, teaching and discipling believers (Acts 18:26). Others, like Mary, Tryphena, Tryphosa, and Persis, were commended for their hard work in the Lord.

This passage reminds us that God calls both men and women to serve Him. Women played—and continue to play—significant roles in spreading the gospel, leading ministries, mentoring others, and building up the church. Yet, many times, their contributions are overlooked or undervalued.

Reflection

  • Do you recognize and appreciate the women serving in your church and community?
  • How can you support and encourage women in ministry today?
  • If you are a woman, are you using your gifts boldly for God’s glory?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of faithful women in Scripture who served You with dedication and love. Help us to recognize, honor, and support the women You have called to ministry. May we encourage one another in our service to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
