Lenten Devotional – Day 5Scripture Readings:
- Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18
- Psalm 19:7-14
- Matthew 25:31-46
Be Holy, As I Am Holy
As we journey through this Lenten season, we are reminded in Leviticus 19:1-2 that holiness is not just an ideal but a command from God:
"Be holy, because I, the LORD your God, am holy."
Holiness is not simply about avoiding sin; it is about imitating the very nature of God. It calls us to a higher standard of living—one that reflects His righteousness, justice, and love. This passage challenges us to examine our lives and ask: Are we truly set apart for God? Are we living in obedience to His commands?
Lent is a season of purification, a time to rid ourselves of anything that separates us from God’s holiness. It is a time for repentance, for self-examination, and for allowing God to transform us into His image.
The Heart That Pleases God
Psalm 19 reminds us that God’s law is perfect, reviving the soul:
"The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple." (Psalm 19:7)
During this season of fasting and prayer, we must allow the Word of God to refine and renew us. His precepts are not burdensome; they are life-giving! They guide us on the path of righteousness and lead us away from sin. Let us pray as David did:
"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." (Psalm 19:14)
Lent is an opportunity to realign our hearts with God's Word and seek His grace to live in obedience.
A Call to Love and Compassion
Jesus, in Matthew 25:31-46, paints a striking picture of the final judgment, where He separates the sheep from the goats. The deciding factor? Love in action.
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." (Matthew 25:35-36)
Lent is not just about fasting from food; it is about feasting on righteousness. It is about seeking justice, showing mercy, and extending kindness to those in need. Jesus makes it clear that our love for Him is demonstrated in how we treat others.
This season is an invitation to practice selflessness—giving to the poor, comforting the brokenhearted, and seeking the lost. As we fast, pray, and reflect, let us also act! Let our faith be seen in our love for others.
A Challenge for Today
- Examine Your Heart – Are you living in holiness? Are there areas where you need repentance and transformation?
- Immerse Yourself in God's Word – Let His precepts guide you into a deeper relationship with Him.
- Show Christ’s Love in Action – Look for opportunities today to serve, bless, and love someone in need.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to holiness. As we walk through this Lenten season, purify our hearts, renew our minds, and help us to reflect Your love. Teach us to live by Your Word and serve others with compassion. May our fasting be acceptable in Your sight, and may our lives be a testimony of Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Let us walk in holiness, meditate on His Word, and love as Christ loves. This is the true heart of Lent!
