A Mother’s Faith and God’s Divine Providence

Scripture Reading: Exodus 2:1-10

Key Verse: Exodus 2:3"But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile."

Mothering Sunday is a time to celebrate and honor the role of mothers and mother figures in our lives. It is a day to reflect on the sacrifices, love, and unwavering faith that mothers demonstrate. One of the most profound biblical examples of a mother’s courage and trust in God is found in the story of Jochebed, the mother of Moses.

A Mother’s Love and Courage

Jochebed faced a time of great danger when Pharaoh ordered the death of all Hebrew baby boys. Yet, her love for Moses was stronger than fear. She hid him for three months, nurturing him despite the risk. When she could no longer keep him safe at home, she made the painful but faith-filled decision to entrust him to God’s care by placing him in a basket on the Nile River.

Divine Providence at Work

God’s hand was evident in every step of Moses’ journey. The baby’s cries reached the ears of Pharaoh’s daughter, who was moved with compassion and decided to raise him as her own. In an incredible twist of divine providence, Moses’ own mother was chosen to nurse and care for him, ensuring he would grow up with knowledge of his true heritage.

Lessons for Today

  1. Trust in God’s Plan – Jochebed did all she could, but ultimately, she placed Moses in God’s hands. Mothers and caregivers today can find encouragement in knowing that when they entrust their children to God, He will guide and protect them.
  2. God Uses the Least Expected – Who would have thought that Pharaoh’s daughter, from the very house that sought to destroy Hebrew children, would be the one to save and raise Moses? God can turn any situation around for His purpose.
  3. A Mother’s Influence Matters – Though Moses grew up in the Egyptian palace, the foundation of faith laid by his mother played a crucial role in shaping him into the deliverer of Israel. Mothers and mentors should never underestimate the impact of their teaching, prayers, and love.

Encouragement for Mothers and Caregivers

This Mothering Sunday, let Jochebed’s story remind us of the power of faith, love, and prayer. Whether you are a mother, grandmother, guardian, or mentor, know that your sacrifices and prayers are never in vain. Just as God had a plan for Moses, He has a divine purpose for every child placed in your care.

May you find strength in knowing that God watches over your loved ones and directs their steps. Keep trusting, keep praying, and keep nurturing – for in due time, God’s purpose will be fulfilled.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of mothers and caregivers. Just as You guided Jochebed, give them strength, wisdom, and faith to nurture and protect the children You have placed in their care. Help them to trust in Your divine plan, knowing that You will always make a way. Amen.
