Exhortation: "A Fast That Transforms"

As we journey through the Lenten season, today’s scriptures invite us to reflect on the kind of fasting that pleases God. Lent is not just about abstaining from food or certain pleasures; it is a divine call to transformation—of our hearts, our relationships, and our actions.

1. The Fast That God Desires (Isaiah 58:9b–end)

The prophet Isaiah reminds us that true fasting is not merely an outward display of piety but a call to radical love and justice. God calls us to:
Remove oppression and injustice.
Feed the hungry and care for the afflicted.
Be a light in the darkness.

When we align our fasting with these actions, God promises that:

  • Our light will rise in darkness (v. 10).
  • The Lord will guide and satisfy us (v. 11).
  • We will be like a well-watered garden (v. 11).

Lent is an opportunity to live out this passage. Are we withholding forgiveness from others? Are we showing kindness to the poor? Are we standing against injustice? God calls us not just to refrain from food but to offer ourselves in love and service.

2. The Cry of the Humble (Psalm 86:1–7)

David’s prayer in this psalm is one of deep humility. He acknowledges his dependence on God, crying:

"Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy." (Psalm 86:1)

Lent is a time to humble ourselves and acknowledge our spiritual poverty. Like David, we must approach God in prayer, trusting that He is merciful and ready to answer us. Are we truly crying out to Him, or are we relying on our own strength?

3. A Call to Follow Christ (Luke 5:27–32)

Jesus’ encounter with Levi (Matthew) challenges us to rethink who is welcome at God’s table. He calls a tax collector—a man despised by society—to follow Him. When criticized, Jesus responds:

"I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Luke 5:32)

Lent is a season of repentance and renewal. Jesus calls us, just as He called Levi. The question is: Are we willing to leave everything behind and follow Him wholeheartedly?

Application for Today:

Fast with purpose – Let your Lenten sacrifices lead you to acts of love and justice.

Pray with humility – Cry out to God like David, knowing He hears and answers.

Follow Christ radically – Like Levi, be willing to leave behind anything that hinders your walk with Jesus.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as we continue this Lenten journey, help us to embrace true fasting—not just in abstinence but in love, justice, and service. Teach us to cry out to You in humility and to follow Christ with all our hearts. May our light shine in the darkness, and may we be transformed by Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question:

How can you make your Lenten fast more meaningful today? Who can you serve with love and kindness?

Stay steadfast in your Lenten journey—God is working in you!
