Lenten Devotional -day 15
Scripture Readings:
- Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28
- Psalm 105:16-22
- Matthew 21:33-46
As we journey through this Lenten season, reflecting on Christ’s suffering, sacrifice, and the path to redemption, today’s readings call us to examine how God works through trials to fulfill His divine purpose. The story of Joseph in Genesis and Jesus’ parable in Matthew both reveal a deep truth: rejection by men does not nullify God’s divine plan.
Betrayal and the Pit – A Test of Faith
Joseph, the beloved son of Jacob, was hated by his brothers because of his father’s favor and his dreams. Their jealousy led them to throw him into a pit and later sell him into slavery (Genesis 37:3-4, 17-28). What seemed like a hopeless situation was, in reality, the unfolding of God’s plan. Psalm 105:16-22 reminds us that it was God who sent Joseph ahead to Egypt to preserve life, even though his path was marked by suffering.
In our Lenten journey, we often find ourselves in "pits"—seasons of trials, rejection, and waiting. But just as Joseph’s suffering prepared him for a higher calling, God refines us through our struggles. Lent is a time of surrender, trusting that the pit is not the end but a process leading to purpose.
The Rejected Stone – God's Chosen Vessel
In Matthew 21:33-46, Jesus tells the parable of the vineyard tenants, where the servants and even the vineyard owner’s son are rejected and killed. This points directly to Christ—the stone the builders rejected, who became the cornerstone. His rejection, suffering, and death were not in vain but part of God’s ultimate plan for our salvation.
Likewise, Joseph’s rejection by his brothers foreshadowed Jesus’ own rejection. Yet, both were instruments of God’s deliverance—Joseph for his family and Jesus for the whole world. This Lent, let us remember that even when the world rejects us, God’s purpose for us remains unshaken.
Strengthening Our Walk in Lent
- Trust God in the Pit – Just as Joseph held onto God through betrayal, let us trust that every trial is preparing us for a greater purpose.
- Embrace the Refining Process – Lent is a season of pruning. Use this time to let go of bitterness, pride, and doubt, knowing that God is molding you into His vessel.
- Fix Your Eyes on the Cross – Jesus endured rejection and suffering for our redemption. As we fast, pray, and seek God, let us remember that through Christ, our trials are transformed into testimonies.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, in this Lenten season, help us to see beyond our struggles and trust in Your divine purpose. Strengthen us in the face of rejection, deepen our faith in Your plan, and remind us that the pit is only a passageway to Your promise. May we walk in humility, surrender, and unwavering trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Lenten Challenge:
Reflect on a time when you felt rejected or overlooked. How did God use that situation for your growth? Spend time today in prayer, surrendering any pain of rejection to God, and trust that He is working all things for your good.
