God, My Strength and Defender

Lenten devotional - Day 33

Scriptures:
Jeremiah 20:10-13
Psalm 18:1-6
John 10:31-end

As we journey through Day 33 of this Lenten season, the weight of reflection, repentance, and renewal is more evident than ever. The call to draw closer to God, even when we feel pressed on every side, rings clear through today’s scriptures.

In Jeremiah 20, we meet a prophet overwhelmed by fear, betrayal, and sorrow. Jeremiah’s own friends turned against him, waiting for him to stumble. But despite the rejection and threats, he boldly declares: “The Lord is with me like a mighty warrior.” What a powerful reminder that in our lowest moments—when it feels like everything and everyone is against us—God fights for us. Lent teaches us that suffering is part of the journey, but we are never alone in it.

Psalm 18 echoes this strength and comfort: “I love you, Lord, my strength… In my distress, I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.” The psalmist didn’t just speak these words—he lived them. When his enemies rose up and darkness surrounded him, he turned to the One who delivers. In Lent, we’re invited to pour out our hearts like this—to cry out in our own struggles, believing that God hears and responds.

In John 10, Jesus is once again being threatened—this time, the religious leaders pick up stones to kill Him. But He stands firm in His identity and mission. He does not run away in fear; He reminds them of His works and His unity with the Father. During Lent, we reflect on the path Christ walked—misunderstood, rejected, and eventually crucified—not because He deserved it, but because He loves us. He stood strong so that we too could have strength.

Takeaway for Today:
Even when the world rises against you—when your name is dragged, your heart is broken, and hope feels distant—remember: God is your defender. Lent is not just about giving things up. It’s about gaining strength in weakness, finding courage in fear, and rediscovering the power of a God who sees, hears, and saves.

Prayer:
Lord, in the face of opposition and pain, help me to trust You as my strength and shield. In this Lenten season, teach me to stand like Jeremiah, cry out like David, and walk boldly like Jesus. Amen.
