Scripture:
“But he said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’” — John 6:20 (ESV)
Devotional
Storms are inevitable. In John 6:16–21, the disciples find themselves battling rough waves in the dark. They are far from shore, with the wind against them—and then, unexpectedly, Jesus walks toward them on the water. Afraid and unsure, they panic. But His words pierce the chaos: “It is I; do not be afraid.”
This passage echoes a powerful truth for our generation: God shows up in the storm.
In today’s fast-paced and unpredictable world—marked by political instability, economic uncertainty, mental health struggles, and personal crises—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The “winds” may be job loss, broken relationships, debt, depression, or fear of the future. Like the disciples, we often find ourselves rowing against the current, exhausted and terrified.
But here’s the good news: Jesus is not distant or unaware—He walks right into our storms.
The phrase “It is I” in Greek (ego eimi) is the same declaration God used in the Old Testament to reveal Himself to Moses (“I AM” – Exodus 3:14). Jesus wasn’t merely calming their nerves—He was reminding them of His divinity, His presence, and His authority over nature and fear.
To “fear not” isn’t a denial of danger—it’s a declaration of trust. It means anchoring our peace not in circumstances, but in Christ who is Lord over every wave.
Life Application:
- In your workplace or school, when anxiety peaks, pause and whisper: “Jesus, You are here. I will not fear.”
- In parenting or relationships, invite Christ into your storms and listen for His calming voice.
- In a chaotic digital world, where bad news trends daily, choose to meditate on His promises instead.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, in every storm I face—externally or within—I choose to hear Your voice over the noise. Teach me to trust that You are near, and help me to live boldly without fear, knowing You are the great “I AM.” Amen.
