Tables and Truth: Serving with Purpose

Devotional:

In Acts 6:1–7, the early church faced a challenge that threatened its unity: Greek-speaking widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. This wasn’t just a logistical hiccup—it was a moment of tension between cultural groups in the rapidly growing Christian community.

Instead of ignoring the issue or letting it spiral into division, the apostles responded with wisdom. They delegated responsibility to spiritually mature men who would ensure fairness and dignity in service, allowing the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Why does this matter today?

In our modern, fast-paced, and often distracted world, the lesson is timeless: every role in the body of Christ matters. Service is not a lesser calling. Whether you're preaching, ushering, managing church social media, or sweeping the floor, you're part of God's strategy for growth.

Service with purpose is about recognizing that kingdom impact isn’t confined to the pulpit. The seven chosen in Acts were not just good organizers—they were full of the Spirit and wisdom. Their faithfulness in service brought peace, order, and explosive growth: “The word of God spread; the number of disciples increased rapidly...” (Acts 6:7).

Key Reflections:

  • In a world where recognition often defines worth, Acts 6 reminds us that obedience and faithfulness are the true measures of impact.
  • Delegation in ministry is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom—it invites others to grow and serve.
  • When every believer walks in their calling, both “tables” and “truth” thrive—and the Church multiplies.

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to serve with purpose. Help me to see the value in every role You assign me. May my service glorify You and bless Your people. Amen.
