Scripture Focus: “We must obey God rather than men.” – Acts 5:29 (ESV)
Devotional
In a world dominated by popularity, politics, and pressure, the words of Peter and the apostles in Acts 5:29 resound with rare conviction: “We must obey God rather than men.” These were not just words—they were a life-altering declaration in the face of authority, imprisonment, and even death.
The early apostles were arrested for preaching about Jesus. The religious leaders, threatened by their boldness and the growing influence of the gospel, ordered them to stop. Yet, with unwavering resolve, Peter reminded them—and us—that divine obedience takes precedence over human approval.
Obedience in a Compromised World
Today, obedience to God often clashes with cultural expectations. In business, being honest may seem like a disadvantage. In education, standing for biblical truth might earn you ridicule. In relationships, choosing purity and forgiveness may feel outdated. The pressure to conform is real, subtle, and constant.
But obedience isn’t about convenience—it’s about covenant. When we choose to obey God, we align ourselves with a higher authority, trusting that His will is perfect even when it’s unpopular.
Modern-Day Acts of Obedience
- The Student Who Stands Alone: A Christian student chooses not to cheat, even if it costs them grades.
- The Employee Who Speaks Up: A worker refuses to lie on reports, risking their job to maintain integrity.
- The Influencer Who Refuses to Compromise: In an age of clicks and likes, they choose faith-based content, even if it limits their reach.
Each of these reflects the same courage the apostles demonstrated—choosing obedience over popularity, truth over comfort.
Reassurance from Heaven
Obedience doesn’t always come with immediate rewards, but it does come with divine affirmation. In verse 32, Peter says, “And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” This means every act of obedience invites the presence and partnership of the Holy Spirit.
Encouragement for Today
You may be mocked, misunderstood, or marginalized for your obedience. But like the apostles, your legacy will not be in how well you pleased people, but how faithfully you followed Christ. God is not looking for perfection, but for hearts fully yielded to His will.
Reflection Questions:
- Where in your life are you tempted to obey men over God?
- What step of obedience is God calling you to take today?
- How can you rely on the Holy Spirit to give you courage?
Prayer:
Lord, give me the strength to obey You in every circumstance. Help me to stand firm when the world calls me to compromise. May my life be a testimony of faith, courage, and unwavering obedience to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
