Scripture
“Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people.” — Acts 6:8 (NIV)
Devotional
In a world obsessed with titles, influence, and applause, the story of Stephen in Acts 6 offers a refreshing, convicting, and empowering perspective on what it truly means to live as a witness for Christ. He wasn't one of the original apostles. He wasn’t famous. Yet, Scripture tells us Stephen was full of God’s grace and power, and through him, God performed great wonders and signs.
Stephen sets a standard—the Stephen Standard—for believers in every generation. He wasn't only full of theological knowledge; he was full of the Spirit, full of grace, and empowered to do extraordinary things in ordinary spaces. His ministry began in service—serving widows at tables (Acts 6:1-6)—but it didn’t end there. God elevated his faithfulness into a platform for signs, wonders, and bold proclamation.
In today’s culture, many measure impact by followers, platforms, and popularity. But Stephen's story reminds us that kingdom greatness is measured by surrender, integrity, and being Spirit-filled. His boldness in the face of lies (Acts 6:9–14), his wisdom that confounded his enemies, and his shining countenance (Acts 6:15) were not the results of charisma but of character shaped by communion with God.
Reflection
Are you striving for influence or for intimacy with God? Are you letting grace and power flow through you in daily life? God can use anyone—anywhere—who is willing to be filled with His Spirit and rooted in His truth.
Contemporary Parallel
In an age of misinformation, cancel culture, and hostility toward faith-based convictions, standing like Stephen is more vital than ever. We need Christians who live and speak truth in love, who show grace when attacked, and who carry the power of the Holy Spirit into boardrooms, classrooms, courtrooms, and communities.
Prayer
Lord, fill me with Your grace and power like You did Stephen. Help me to live boldly, love deeply, and speak truthfully, no matter the cost. Use my life as a witness to Your kingdom. Amen.
