Scripture: Acts 7:51–8:1a
Don’t Resist the Holy Spirit!
"You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit!"
— Acts 7:51 (NIV)
In the digital age, resisting change is often seen as a sign of stubbornness or fear. Yet, when it comes to spiritual matters, resisting the Holy Spirit is more than mere reluctance—it is spiritual rebellion. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, stood before the Sanhedrin with boldness, confronting a religious system that had hardened itself against God. His words cut deep, not because they were harsh, but because they were true.
To be "stiff-necked" is to be unteachable, rigid, and proud—traits that prevent divine transformation. In our world today, where self-help philosophies and individualism reign, the gentle promptings of the Holy Spirit can easily be ignored. Like the religious leaders Stephen addressed, many still hold onto tradition, power, and control—choosing religion over relationship.
Stephen’s accusers had religion but lacked repentance. They celebrated the law but rejected the Lawgiver. And though they could quote Scripture, they were deaf to the Spirit's voice.
This passage challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we resisting the Holy Spirit in areas of conviction, calling, or obedience? Do we rationalize disobedience in the name of comfort or convenience? The Holy Spirit convicts us not to condemn, but to lead us into life, truth, and intimacy with God.
Stephen's story also reveals the cost of obedience. He was falsely accused, dragged out, and stoned—yet his final words reflected Christ-like forgiveness and vision: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” What power! What grace! Such response is only possible when one is led by the Spirit.
In a world full of noise, distractions, and competing voices, the Holy Spirit still speaks—through Scripture, prayer, conviction, and community. Our part is to listen, respond, and yield.
Let us not be stiff-necked in a Spirit-led world. Let us not resist the One who leads us into all truth.
Reflection Questions:
- In what areas of your life are you resisting the Holy Spirit?
- How can you cultivate a heart that listens and responds to God daily?
- What steps can you take today to act on what the Holy Spirit is prompting?
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I repent for the times I’ve resisted Your voice. Soften my heart, renew my mind, and lead me in Your truth. Help me to walk in obedience and grace. Amen.
