The God Who Sees Me: Shine Your Face Upon Your Servant

Scripture: Psalm 31:1–5, 16

Devotional:

In a world where surveillance is everywhere—CCTVs on streets, GPS tracking on phones, and digital footprints trailing us—it’s easy to feel watched, but not truly seen. Amidst this overwhelming visibility, many still feel invisible—overlooked in relationships, misunderstood in the workplace, or lost in a fast-paced culture that prizes performance over presence.

Psalm 31:16 cries out, “Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love.” This ancient prayer is deeply contemporary. It reminds us that even in our darkest, most isolated moments, God doesn’t just watch us—He sees us.

To say “God’s face shines” on someone is more than poetic language. In Hebrew culture, a shining face meant favor, attention, and loving presence. It’s like a parent’s warm gaze on a beloved child, or a mentor’s proud smile during your breakthrough. When the Psalmist asks for God's face to shine, he is yearning for divine affirmation in a world full of affliction.

Today, as digital connectivity increases, human connection often diminishes. But God’s attention is never distracted. He sees the tears we hide, the burdens we carry, and the fears we mask with filters and smiles. Psalm 31 doesn’t sugarcoat pain—it starts with a desperate plea: “In you, Lord, I have taken refuge…” It ends (verse 16) with confidence that God's loving gaze brings salvation.

This passage is also echoed in the words Jesus spoke on the cross—“Into your hands I commit my spirit” (v.5)—demonstrating the ultimate trust even in suffering. We are invited into that same posture: of surrender, trust, and hope.

Application:

  • When you feel unseen, remind yourself: God’s face is turned toward you.
  • In prayer, ask not only for answers, but for awareness of His loving presence.
  • Practice seeing others too—recognize and affirm those around you who feel invisible.

Prayer:

Lord, in a world where it’s easy to feel forgotten, thank You for seeing me. Shine Your face upon me and fill my heart with Your unfailing love. Amen.
