Scripture: Acts 14:5–7
“There they continued to preach the gospel.” – Acts 14:7 (NIV)
Devotional
Life doesn’t always go as planned. For many believers, the path of faith is often lined with trials, rejection, and opposition. But Acts 14:5–7 reminds us that persecution does not cancel God’s purpose. Instead, it often positions us to fulfill it more powerfully.
Paul and Barnabas had just experienced a backlash in Iconium. The city was divided—some supported the apostles, others plotted to kill them. Facing life-threatening danger, they fled to Lystra and Derbe. But what’s most powerful in this passage isn’t just that they escaped—it’s that “there they continued to preach the gospel.”
1. Trouble Doesn’t Mean You’re Off Track
It’s tempting to believe that difficulty is a sign that God’s plan has derailed. Yet, throughout Scripture, God often led His people through hardship to reveal His glory.
Paul and Barnabas didn’t interpret persecution as a failure. They didn’t question their calling. Instead, they moved forward. They didn’t let trouble dictate their purpose.
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed…” – 2 Corinthians 4:8
Even in trials, you are still in the center of God’s will. Sometimes, the resistance is confirmation that you're on the right path.
2. Your Voice Has Power, Even in the Fire
When Paul and Barnabas arrived in Lystra and Derbe, they could have chosen silence. After all, preaching had gotten them into trouble. But instead, they preached more boldly.
This is a challenge and encouragement to every believer: Don’t silence your faith because of fear. Don’t hide your testimony because of trials. When we speak up for God amid adversity, He backs us up with His power.
“Do not be afraid… Keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you…” – Acts 18:9–10
The world needs to hear your story—not just your victories but how God is sustaining you in the struggle.
3. God’s Plan Doesn’t Pause Because of Pain
One of the most beautiful truths in this passage is that God’s purpose is persistent. Paul and Barnabas were displaced, but the Gospel advanced. In fact, it was because of the persecution that the Word reached new places.
Your pain may feel like a detour, but with God, nothing is wasted. Every step, even the hard ones, is part of His redemptive roadmap.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” – Romans 8:28
Even when it’s uncomfortable, God is still working. He still has a plan for your life—one that is full of hope, growth, and purpose.
Reflection
Are you going through a season of resistance or rejection? Don’t assume God has forgotten you. Like Paul and Barnabas, keep going, keep preaching, keep believing. Your obedience in adversity may be the seed of someone else’s salvation.
Remember: You may be persecuted—but you are not silenced. God’s Word will still go forth through you.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that persecution doesn’t mean You’ve abandoned me. Give me courage to keep moving forward in faith. Let Your purpose be fulfilled in my life, even in hard times. Help me not to stay silent, but to speak boldly about Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
