A New Beginning: God Resets the Calendar

Scripture: “This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.” – Exodus 12:2 (ESV)

Devotional:

There are moments in life when it feels like too much time has passed, like the window of opportunity has closed for good. Maybe it’s the career you never started, the marriage that didn’t work out, the child you’re still waiting for, or the dream that’s been shelved so long it’s coated in dust. But Exodus 12:2 offers a powerful reminder, God can reset the calendar.

The Israelites had been enslaved for over 400 years. Generations were born and buried under Egyptian oppression. Yet on the eve of their deliverance, God didn’t just promise freedom, He rewrote their calendar. He told Moses and Aaron, “This month shall be for you the beginning of months.” In other words, “Forget how time has moved up to this point, I’m starting something new.”

What a profound act. Time itself was reoriented around God's move. What had been a history marked by slavery would now be remembered as the moment God stepped in.

Think about that. After years of abuse, waiting, and disappointment, God didn’t just lead them out, He gave them a new point of reference. A new beginning.

We often measure our lives by losses, delays, or failures. But God invites us to measure forward by His intervention. He’s not bound by your past or the timeline the world has placed on you.

Take Ama, a woman in her mid-forties who had given up on love after a painful divorce in her thirties. She poured her energy into raising her kids and growing her catering business. One day, without looking for it, she met someone who genuinely honored and loved her. At 47, she got married again, not in a rushed courthouse ceremony, but in a joy-filled garden wedding surrounded by friends and family. Her story didn’t end with loss. God rewrote her timeline.

Also, consider Kwesi, who failed his senior high exams twice and was often mocked by family members. He worked odd jobs for years before deciding to try again. At 29, he passed with distinction, got a scholarship, and today he’s a respected teacher helping struggling students believe in themselves. A man who once thought he had missed his chance is now opening doors for others.

God’s resets aren’t rushed. They are redemptive. He knows how to make new beginnings that are not late but perfectly timed. He doesn’t just pick up where things went wrong, He creates a brand-new page, often using what seemed wasted as part of the story.

Maybe you’ve been counting the years, feeling behind. Maybe shame or regret whispers that it's too late. But hear this: If God could turn centuries of sorrow into a new year for Israel, He can reset your life too.

The question is not whether it’s possible. It’s whether you’ll believe Him for it.

So today, lift your head. What feels like the end could be the very place God begins again. Let Him reset the calendar.

Prayer:
Lord, I thank You that You’re not limited by time or my past. Help me to embrace the new beginning You have for me. Rewrite my story and help me walk in hope, knowing You can make all things new. Amen.
