Devotional
There are moments in life when God feels near. A worship service that stirs your soul. A prayer where you know He heard. A quiet moment that seems charged with something more. But have you ever truly considered what it means when God comes down?
In Exodus 19, Israel witnessed something few ever have: the manifest presence of God descending upon a mountain. But what they saw and felt wasn’t light and fluffy, it was overwhelming.
Scripture Focus
“On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled… Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire.”
— Exodus 19:16, 18 (NIV)
Understanding God’s Manifest Presence
The manifest presence of God is different from His omnipresence. While God is everywhere, His manifest presence is when He chooses to reveal Himself in a tangible, undeniable way. In Exodus 19, God wasn’t hiding in mystery, He was showing up in power, with fire, smoke, thunder, and the blast of a heavenly trumpet.
This moment wasn’t about fear for fear’s sake it was about honor, awe, and divine purpose. God was setting the stage for covenant. He wasn’t coming down to entertain. He was drawing near to establish relationship on His terms.
What This Means for Us Today
We often pray things like, “Lord, show us Your glory,” or “Come, Holy Spirit.” These are good prayers but they come with weight. God’s presence changes things. When He draws near:
- Conviction comes – Sin can’t stand comfortably.
- Comfort comes – His nearness is healing.
- Reverence is required – It’s not casual; it’s holy.
The Israelites trembled not because God was cruel, but because He is holy. And holiness should shake us out of apathy. We’re often too casual in worship, too flippant with sacred things. But when God truly comes down, things don’t stay the same.
Practical Encouragements
-
Desire His Presence
Longing for God is not a bad thing, it’s the beginning of everything. But desire His presence with reverence, not just for experience. Hunger for Him more than what He gives. -
Prepare Your Heart
God told Moses to consecrate the people before He came (Exodus 19:10). Spend time in repentance, in worship, in silence. Don’t rush into His presence unprepared. -
Don’t Get Familiar with Holy Things
Familiarity is a blessing but it can breed dishonor if we’re not careful. Just because you attend church or lead in ministry doesn’t mean you approach God casually. -
Make Room for Awe
It’s okay to be awestruck. In fact, it’s necessary. When we lose our awe, we often lose our wonder—and eventually our worship.
Personal Reflection
Have you ever experienced a moment where you knew God was near? How did it change you?
Are there places in your heart or habits in your life that have become too casual toward God?
Prayer
Lord, I want Your presence not just in word, but in reality. Help me to never take You lightly. Teach me to desire Your manifest presence with reverence and awe. Prepare my heart to encounter You. Shake me out of spiritual dullness and draw me into deep, holy fear not of punishment, but of Your greatness. Amen.
Closing Thought
When God comes down, everything changes. And though He is loving and gracious, He is also holy and majestic. Let’s never take His nearness for granted. Let’s desire His presence, but always remember, it’s no small thing when heaven touches earth.
