Learning Heaven’s Language

Scripture Focus: “I heard a language I had not known.” – Psalm 81:5b (ESV)

Devotional

Psalm 81 is a call to remember, return, and respond to God. But right in the middle of the psalm—almost hidden—is a curious line: “I heard a language I had not known.” This statement captures something deep: God sometimes speaks in unfamiliar ways. Ways that challenge us. Ways we did not expect.

If we are honest, we often want God to speak through big signs or a booming voice from the sky. But He usually does not. Instead, He speaks through subtle nudges, quiet convictions, unexpected people, Scripture you have read a hundred times but suddenly, it hits different.

God Still Speaks—But Are We Listening?

Sometimes His voice feels foreign not because He is not speaking, but because we are not tuned in. We are busy, distracted, or just not paying attention. Think of a radio, if it’s not tuned to the right frequency, it only picks up static. That is how our hearts work too.

God may be speaking through:

  • A quiet moment in your room
  • A worship song that stirs something deeper
  • A conversation with someone you didn’t expect to be used by God
  • A situation that breaks your rhythm to get your attention
  • A Scripture verse you have  read before, but now it seems tailor-made for your moment

Practical Ways to Tune In

  1. Quiet the Noise
Start your day with 5–10 minutes of silence. No music. No phone. Just a heart ready to hear.

  2. Stay in the Word
God’s voice is never outside the truth of Scripture. Keep reading—it shapes your ears to hear Him.

  3. Ask and Wait
Before making decisions, ask God to speak and give you peace or redirection. Then wait. Don’t rush.

  4. Be Open to the Unexpected
Don’t box God in. He may use someone you’d normally overlook, or a moment you’d usually dismiss.

  5. Write It Down
Journal what you sense God may be saying. Revisit it. Often, clarity comes over time.

Final Thought:

God isn’t silent, He’s speaking. The question is: have we slowed down enough to recognize His voice? He may sound different than we’re used to. He may speak in a “language” we don’t know yet. But if we stay close, stay humble, and stay listening, we’ll hear Him.

He is still speaking. Let us start listening.
