Devotional
Words carry weight. In Jesus’ time, the Pharisees twisted oaths to make some sound more binding than others, forgetting that every word is spoken before God. Today, we may not swear by the temple or by heaven, but we often underestimate the power of our words—both spoken and typed.
Think about how quickly a careless tweet, WhatsApp message, or TikTok video can go viral and cause harm. Once words are released, they can’t be taken back. Whether it’s a promise we break, gossip we share, or harsh words we fling in anger, our words leave a trail. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
God calls us to speak with integrity. When we say “yes,” let it mean yes. When we say “no,” let it mean no (Matthew 5:37). In an age where people post without thinking, Christians are called to pause, weigh their words, and choose truth and kindness. Our speech should reflect God’s character, not just our emotions.
Practical Application
- Before you post or speak, ask: “Will this honor God and uplift others?”
- Keep your promises, even when it’s inconvenient.
- Use your words to heal rather than hurt—send that encouraging message instead of a sarcastic reply.
- Be slow to respond in online arguments. Silence is sometimes wiser than winning an exchange.
Prayer
Lord, teach me to value my words. Help me to speak truth with love, keep my promises, and use my voice to honor You. May my words bring life, not harm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
