“On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.” – 1 Thessalonians 2:4
Devotional
One of the hardest battles we face today is the pressure to seek approval. Social media counts likes, workplaces demand recognition, and even in friendships, we fear rejection if we don’t “fit in.” Paul’s words to the Thessalonians are a refreshing reminder: our primary call is to please God, not people.
Pleasing people may bring temporary applause, but it often leaves us exhausted, confused, and even compromised. Living for God’s approval, on the other hand, gives us peace, direction, and freedom. When Paul and his companions preached the gospel, they weren’t worried about how people would respond. Their mission was to honor God, even if it meant facing criticism or persecution.
In our time, this could mean standing up for truth even when it’s unpopular, making ethical choices at work even when shortcuts look easier, or choosing modesty in a world that rewards showiness. It doesn’t mean we stop caring for people; rather, it means our foundation is God’s approval first. When we live this way, we actually serve people better—because our actions are rooted in love, not fear or manipulation.
The real question we must ask daily is: Whose voice matters most? God’s or people’s? His voice brings life and lasting reward, while people’s opinions change with the wind.
Prayer
Lord, help me to live for Your approval above all else. Give me the courage to choose what honors You, even when it’s hard. Free me from the need for human applause and remind me daily that Your “well done” is worth more than any recognition this world can give. Amen.
