Scripture Reading: “When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, ‘This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.’ … Then Jesus went with them.” – Luke 7:4–6 (NIV)
In Luke 7:1–10, we meet a Roman centurion whose servant was gravely ill. Though the centurion was a man of rank and authority, he humbled himself to seek help—not for himself, but for his servant. This act of intercession is powerful because it shows us the importance of standing in the gap for others in prayer.
The Jewish elders even testified of the centurion’s good works, pleading with Jesus on his behalf. But when Jesus was on His way, the centurion sent word again, saying he was unworthy for Christ to enter his home. Instead, he expressed unshakable faith in the authority of Jesus’ word: “But say the word, and my servant will be healed” (v. 7). Jesus was so moved that He declared He had not found such great faith even in Israel.
This story teaches us three key truths:
-
Intercession is selfless love in action. The centurion could have ignored his servant’s suffering, yet he sought Christ with urgency on his behalf. In the same way, we are called to carry the burdens of others in prayer (Galatians 6:2).
-
Intercession invites God’s power. Jesus responded to the plea, showing that prayer for others moves His heart (James 5:16). When we stand in prayer for loved ones, nations, or even strangers, we participate in the ministry of Christ Himself, who intercedes for us at the Father’s right hand (Romans 8:34).
-
Faith strengthens intercession. The centurion did not just ask—he believed. He recognized the authority of Christ’s word over sickness. This should encourage us to pray boldly, knowing that Jesus’ word is still alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me the power of intercession through the centurion’s faith. Teach me to pray not only for my needs but also for the needs of others. Strengthen my faith to trust in the authority of Your word. Help me to be faithful in standing in the gap for family, friends, leaders, and nations. May my prayers bring healing, restoration, and hope, all for Your glory. Amen.
