Living with Eternity in Mind

Scripture Reading: Luke 16:19–31

Devotional Reflection:
Jesus’ parable of the rich man and Lazarus draws a clear contrast between a life of self-indulgence and a life of eternal reward. The rich man lived in luxury, dressed in fine clothes, and feasted daily, but his heart was closed to the needs of Lazarus, who lay at his gate longing for scraps. At death, the realities shifted: Lazarus was carried to Abraham’s side in comfort, while the rich man found himself in torment, crying out for relief.

This story is a sober reminder that our earthly lives are temporary, but our eternal destiny is permanent. What we do with what God has entrusted to us; our wealth, influence, and time echoes into eternity. It is not wrong to have riches, but it is dangerous when our riches blind us to the needs of others and to the call of God’s Word. The rich man’s request for his brothers to be warned shows us that the Word of God is already sufficient; our response to it today determines our eternal tomorrow.

Life Application:
Living with eternity in mind means making daily choices that reflect eternal values. It means being compassionate to those in need, stewarding resources wisely, and aligning our lives with God’s Word. It calls us to ask hard questions: Who is at my gate today? How am I using what I have to honor God and serve others? Life on earth is short, but eternity is forever. Let us live today as people who know tomorrow is eternal.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that this world is not my final home. Help me to live with eternity in view, to value Your Word above all else, and to use my life to reflect Your love and mercy. Give me eyes to see those in need around me and a heart that responds with compassion. May my choices today bring glory to You and prepare me for eternity in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
