The Prayer God Listens To

Scripture Reading: Luke 18:9–14

Devotional Reflection

In this parable, Jesus draws a clear line between two men who went to pray: one proud, the other humble. The Pharisee stood tall, boasting about his good deeds and comparing himself to others. The tax collector, however, stood at a distance, unable to lift his eyes to heaven. He simply said, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

God rejected the prayer of the proud man but accepted the humble one. This teaches us that God is not impressed by eloquent words or religious acts; He looks at the heart. True prayer begins when we stop pretending to be perfect and start being honest with God. The prayer that touches heaven is the one that comes from a broken and repentant heart.

Life Application

Before you pray, check your heart. Are you seeking to impress God or to connect with Him? The secret to effective prayer is humility. Admit your weaknesses, acknowledge your sins, and trust in God’s mercy. When you approach God sincerely, He listens—not because of your worthiness, but because of His grace.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18

Prayer

Heavenly Father, teach me to come before You with a humble heart. Deliver me from pride and self-righteousness. Let my prayers rise from sincerity and repentance. Hear me, Lord, and cleanse me by Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
