Remember Lot’s Wife — Guard Your Heart from Looking Back

 Scripture: Luke 17:32 — “Remember Lot’s wife.”

Reading:

Luke 17:26–33
Genesis 19:12–26

Devotional Reflection

Jesus uses the simple but sharp command, “Remember Lot’s wife,” to warn us about the danger of divided hearts. Lot’s wife began the journey out of destruction, but her heart never truly left Sodom. Her feet were moving forward, yet her affection remained behind. One look cost her everything.

Looking back is more than a glance. It is a sign of affection for what God has asked us to let go. It shows a longing for old habits, old environments, or old identities that slow down our spiritual growth. Sometimes we are tempted to revisit places God has delivered us from, entertain emotions He has healed, or hold on to relationships He has clearly moved us away from.

Jesus reminds us that following Him requires a steady heart. You cannot move into the fullness of God’s purpose while holding on to what He has already judged. A backward heart weakens forward progress. Lot’s wife stands as a warning that not every step is physical — some are decisions of the heart.

God wants your focus, your trust, and your obedience. When He calls you out, fix your eyes ahead. Your future in Him is always better than anything behind you.

Life Application

  1. Identify what still pulls you back.
Be honest about habits, relationships, or desires that compete for your heart.

  2. Pray for strength to release what God has ended.
Letting go is not always easy, but grace is available.

  3. Practice forward living.
Replace old patterns with intentional steps of obedience — prayer, fellowship, service, or study.

  4. Guard your heart.
Set boundaries around your spiritual life. What you entertain shapes your direction.

  5. Choose obedience even when it feels costly.
Lot’s wife reminds us that the cost of disobedience is far greater.

Prayer

Father, help me keep my heart fixed on You. Remove every desire that pulls me back to what You’ve delivered me from. Give me strength to walk forward with faith and obedience. Teach me to trust Your leading and protect my heart from distraction. May my life honour You in every step I take. Amen.
