Jesus Meets Us on the Mountain

Scripture Reading

Matthew 15:29–31
“Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And He went up on the mountain and sat down there. And great crowds came to Him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at His feet, and He healed them.”

Quote

“You can bring anything to Jesus—He never turns away the broken.” — Max Lucado

Devotional Reflection

In Matthew 15:29–31, Jesus chooses a mountain as the setting for His next move. In Scripture, mountains often symbolize encounter, revelation, and divine activity—think of Moses, Elijah, and even Jesus’ own transfiguration. Matthew intentionally highlights this to show that when Jesus sits on the mountain, He is not hiding; He is inviting.

The crowd comes with all kinds of conditions—physical, emotional, and social. Matthew uses strong language to describe the people’s suffering, showing that nothing was too difficult for Christ. The phrase “they put them at His feet” is loaded with meaning. In Jewish culture, laying something at someone’s feet was a sign of surrender and trust.

This passage reminds us that the mountain is not a barrier but a meeting place. Jesus doesn’t remain distant; He received the people just as they were. The healing that follows is not only physical but also a sign of the Messiah’s reign—restoring what is broken and making whole what has been crushed.

In its first-century context, Matthew is showing both Jews and Gentiles that Jesus is the Savior who welcomes all who climb toward Him, no matter the weight they’re carrying.

Practical Life Application

There are moments when life feels like a long climb. You may be carrying worries about your future, your family, your calling, or your health. This passage encourages you not to stay at the base of the mountain. Jesus waits in the place of encounter.

Just like the crowd, don’t hide what hurts. Bring your fears, hopes, questions, and weaknesses to Him. The people didn’t try to fix themselves before coming; they simply came. Trust that He still heals, restores, and strengthens those who draw close.

Make space every day for this “mountain moment”—whether through prayer, Scripture reading, or quiet reflection. Jesus is still meeting people who choose to climb toward Him.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me into Your presence. Help me bring every burden, fear, and weakness to You without hesitation. Meet me on my mountain today. Restore my strength, renew my hope, and help me trust Your healing touch. Amen.

Benediction

May the Lord who meets you on the mountain lift your head, strengthen your heart, and give you peace as you walk with Him today. Amen.
