True Discipleship: Doing the Will of God

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:21

"Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

Introduction

Beloved in Christ, today's scripture challenges us to examine our faith and actions. Jesus, speaking to His followers, warns against superficial faith—faith that speaks but does not act. This verse compels us to consider: What does it mean to do the will of God?

1. The Danger of Empty Words

“Lord, Lord” as a Cry of Recognition:

In this passage, Jesus acknowledges that many people call on His name, recognizing Him as Lord. However, He emphasizes that verbal acknowledgment alone is not enough.

"I am a Christian" or attending church every Sunday does not guarantee our salvation. Faith must be demonstrated in action.

In James 2:17, we are reminded that "faith without works is dead." Words are meaningful only when paired with obedience to God’s commands.

2. Doing the Will of the Father

What Is the Will of God?

The will of God is revealed through His Word. It involves:

Loving God wholeheartedly (Matthew 22:37).

Loving our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39).

Living a life of holiness and righteousness (1 Thessalonians 4:3).

Obedience as a Mark of True Discipleship:

Jesus models obedience to God’s will, even unto death (Luke 22:42). True discipleship means aligning our desires and actions with God’s purpose.

Practical Application:

Actively serve in your community.

Live a life that glorifies God in word, thought, and deed.

3. The Consequences of Disobedience

Rejection by Christ:

Jesus warns that those who merely profess His name without obedience will face rejection. This highlights the seriousness of living in alignment with God’s will.

In Matthew 25:31–46, Jesus separates the sheep from the goats based on their deeds of kindness and service.

Heaven Is for the Faithful:

Those who do the will of God will inherit eternal life. Obedience is the key that unlocks the gates of heaven.

4. Living as True Disciples

Self-Examination:

Am I doing the will of God in my daily life?

Is my faith evident in my actions?

Encouragement to Act:

Let us not be hearers of the Word only but doers (James 1:22).

Seek God in prayer to know His will and be empowered to obey it.

Conclusion

Jesus' teaching in Matthew 7:21 is a call to authentic discipleship. Let us not be Christians in name only but followers who live out the will of God. True discipleship requires faith in action, obedience to God’s commands, and a heart fully surrendered to His purpose.

Call to Action:

As we reflect on today’s message, let us commit ourselves to living lives that align with God’s will. May we be counted among those who not only say "Lord, Lord" but who also live as faithful servants of Christ. Amen.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that calls us to live in obedience. Help us to not only profess our faith but to act on it daily. May our lives reflect Your will, and may we be counted among the faithful in Your kingdom. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
