Scripture: "But the king rebelled against him by sending his envoys to Egypt to get horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he who does such things escape? Will he break the covenant and yet escape?" – Ezekiel 17:15 (NIV)
Devotional Thought
In Ezekiel 17, God gives the prophet a vision of two eagles and a vine. The first eagle represents Babylon, which took King Jehoiachin and the nobles of Judah into exile. The vine, representing Judah, was planted in Babylon under King Zedekiah. But instead of remaining faithful, Zedekiah sought help from Egypt—the second eagle—to break free from Babylon’s rule. This rebellion led to Judah’s downfall because it was a direct violation of God's will.
This passage teaches a powerful lesson: trusting in human alliances over God’s plan leads to destruction. Instead of relying on God’s purpose, Zedekiah looked to Egypt, hoping human strength would save him. But Egypt failed, and Judah was devastated.
How often do we make the same mistake? When faced with uncertainty, we sometimes put our trust in people, wealth, or worldly systems rather than seeking God. We look for quick solutions instead of waiting on the Lord. But just like Zedekiah, misplaced trust leads to disappointment.
Application
- Seek God First – Before making major decisions, pray and ask for God’s direction. His wisdom surpasses human understanding.
- Trust in God’s Timing – God’s plans may not unfold as quickly as we want, but they are always perfect. Waiting on Him is better than rushing into alliances that lead to failure.
- Be Faithful to God’s Covenant – Like Zedekiah, we have a covenant with God through Christ. Breaking it for worldly security can bring spiritual consequences.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have trusted in human strength instead of Your perfect plan. Help me to seek You first in all things and to wait patiently for Your guidance. Give me faith to trust Your ways, even when they don’t make sense to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
