The Covenant-Keeping God

Lenten Devotional -day 13

Scripture Readings:

  • 2 Samuel 7:4-16
  • Psalm 89:26-36
  • Matthew 1:18-25

As we journey through this Lenten season, reflecting on God’s faithfulness and our call to repentance, today’s scriptures remind us of the steadfast love of the covenant-keeping God. In our moments of fasting, prayer, and self-examination, we find strength in the truth that God’s promises are forever settled.

God’s Unwavering Covenant (2 Samuel 7:4-16, Psalm 89:26-36)

In 2 Samuel 7, God makes a covenant with David, assuring him that his throne will be established forever. Despite David’s imperfections, God’s promise stands firm, not because of David’s righteousness but because of God’s faithfulness. Psalm 89 echoes this, declaring that even when God’s people falter, His steadfast love and faithfulness will never fail.

During Lent, we recognize our own weaknesses and shortcomings. We often struggle with sin, doubt, and spiritual dryness. But these scriptures remind us that God's love and promises remain unshaken. Just as He upheld His covenant with David, He upholds His covenant with us through Christ.

The Fulfillment of the Promise (Matthew 1:18-25)

The fulfillment of God’s promise to David is ultimately seen in Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary. Matthew 1:18-25 narrates the miraculous birth of Christ, emphasizing that He is Emmanuel – God with us. In Jesus, God’s eternal covenant is fully revealed. He is the true King whose reign will never end.

Lent is a time of preparation, much like how Joseph prepared to embrace his role in God’s divine plan. He faced uncertainty and fear, yet he obeyed God. His obedience reminds us that Lent is not just about sacrifice but about trusting God’s leading. Are we ready to surrender like Joseph? Are we willing to align our lives with God’s divine purpose?

Exhortation: Walking in Covenant Grace

As we fast, pray, and reflect today, let us remember:

  1. God’s promises never fail – No matter our struggles, He remains faithful.
  2. Jesus is the fulfillment of all God’s covenants – In Him, we have redemption, grace, and eternal hope.
  3. Obedience positions us for divine purpose – Like Joseph, let’s trust and obey, even when it’s difficult.

Lent is a journey of renewal, a time to reaffirm our trust in God’s promises. Just as He kept His word to David, He will keep His word to us. Whatever burdens you carry, lay them before the covenant-keeping God, knowing that in Christ, every promise is Forever Settled.

Prayer:
Lord, as we walk this Lenten path, strengthen our faith in Your unshakable promises. Help us to trust like Joseph, surrender like David, and praise You like the psalmist. May we embrace Your covenant grace and walk in obedience, knowing that Your word is forever settled in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
