What Are You Saying?

Scripture:

Matthew 5:22 (NIV):
"But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell."

Reflection

Words are never just words. Jesus, in this powerful teaching, draws a sharp line between casual insults and serious spiritual consequences. He shows us that anger and contempt, when left unchecked, can lead us down a dangerous path—not only in how we treat others, but also in the condition of our own hearts.

“Raca” was an Aramaic insult—a way of calling someone worthless. In today’s language, it might sound like calling someone stupid, useless, or trash. Words like these are often said in frustration, sometimes even joked about. But Jesus is not laughing. He’s showing us that these words expose something much deeper—our pride, our bitterness, our brokenness.

God cares about how we speak because our words reflect the state of our souls. Scripture says, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). So if cutting, careless, or cruel words keep coming out, it’s time to look inward. What’s overflowing in your heart?

But here’s the hope: we don’t have to stay in that place. Jesus invites us to a better way—a life marked by mercy, love, and self-control. That begins when we let Him change us from the inside out. Only He can cleanse our hearts, heal our anger, and teach us to speak with grace.

Maybe today you’ve realized your words have hurt others. Or maybe you’ve been the one wounded by someone else’s voice. Either way, healing and transformation are possible—through Jesus.

He doesn’t just want us to clean up our language. He wants to give us new hearts. And that starts with surrender.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I admit that my words haven’t always honored You. Sometimes they’ve been sharp, cruel, or careless. Forgive me. Cleanse my heart and help me to speak life, not death. I want You to be the Lord over my lips—and my life. Come into my heart, heal me, and teach me to love as You do. Amen.

Surrender

If you’ve never truly surrendered your life to Jesus, today is the day. Let Him forgive your past and give you a new beginning. Invite Him to be your Savior and Lord—He’s ready and waiting.
