Key Verse: “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” – Luke 10:19 (NKJV)
Devotional
Many believers live far beneath their spiritual potential because they do not understand the authority Christ has given them. Jesus did not just call us to follow Him; He commissioned us with power to act in His name. Luke chapter 10 presents a compelling picture of what it means to walk in that divine authority. When the seventy disciples were sent out, they returned with joy, not because of human approval, but because even demons submitted to them in the name of Jesus.
The Nature of Our Authority
In Luke 10:19, Jesus makes a bold and liberating declaration. He says, “I give you the authority…” Authority is not something we earn. It is given by Christ. It is the legal right and spiritual power to act on His behalf. The authority Jesus gives is not partial or conditional. It is total over the power of the enemy. He uses the imagery of serpents and scorpions to represent evil forces, both physical and spiritual, that try to intimidate or destroy God’s people.
This authority is not reserved for apostles or pastors. Every believer who walks with Christ is empowered to use His name. That means you can stand firm against fear, sickness, oppression, and demonic interference because you have been spiritually deputized.
Power to Rebuke
One of the practical expressions of divine authority is the ability to rebuke evil. To rebuke is to confront and command in the name of Jesus. Jesus rebuked storms, sicknesses, and unclean spirits. He set the standard for us. Today, many tolerate what they have been given power to rebuke. If fear, confusion, or demonic harassment is attacking your peace or family, you do not need to wait passively. Speak God’s word with boldness. Declare, in the name of Jesus, that such oppression has no place in your home or life.
Power to Heal
Jesus not only commissioned the seventy to preach; He empowered them to heal the sick. Healing is not just a biblical story. It is a present-day promise. Mark 16:17–18 affirms that believers will lay hands on the sick and they will recover. You may not be a doctor, but you carry healing power in your hands and words. Pray with faith for yourself and others. God still heals through willing vessels.
Power to Cast Out
Spiritual warfare is real. But the believer is not helpless. Jesus said in Matthew 12:28, “If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.” The presence of the Holy Spirit in your life equips you to confront and cast out evil spirits. This is not something to fear. It is a demonstration of the Kingdom. If someone is bound, you can pray for their release in the name of Jesus, commanding every foul spirit to go. Your authority is not based on feelings but on the truth of the Word.
Living It Out Daily
- Know your authority – Spend time studying what the Bible says about your identity in Christ.
- Speak boldly – Use the name of Jesus with faith. Do not hesitate to pray with authority.
- Act with compassion – Exercise power not to show off, but to lift others up and point them to Christ.
- Stay submitted to God – Authority flows from relationship. As you walk in obedience, the power of God flows through you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me authority through Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in this truth daily. I declare that I have power over every work of the enemy. I choose to speak life, rebuke evil, and bring healing to the broken in Your name. Let Your power be seen in my life as a testimony to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
