When God Doesn’t Ask for Permission

Scripture: “The Lord does whatever pleases Him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.” – Psalm 135:6 (NIV)

Devotional:

We live in a world obsessed with control. From managing our schedules to curating our online identities, we want to be in charge. So when life slips out of our hands and God doesn’t act the way we expected, it shakes us. Psalm 135:6 offers a humbling reminder: “The Lord does whatever pleases Him.”

God doesn’t need our approval or input to act. He is not a committee member in our life decisions. He is the King. And yet, when things happen that we didn’t plan, job loss, closed doors, delayed answers we are tempted to doubt His goodness because His will didn’t match our desire.

But this verse pushes us to see God for who He is: sovereign, unbound, and completely in control. He moves across the heavens, the earth, and the sea, doing whatever pleases Him not because He is reckless, but because He is all-knowing and good. His ways don’t need our permission. They just need our trust.

Think of Joseph in the Old Testament. Betrayed by his brothers, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison. None of it made sense at the time. But behind every twist was a sovereign God working out a plan. Joseph later said, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20). God didn’t consult Joseph before allowing hardship but in the end, His will brought salvation to many.

The hard truth is that faith is not built in perfect conditions. It’s built when you still praise while waiting. It’s built when you submit even though the outcome hurts. When God says “no,” “not yet,” or “this way instead,” He’s not being cruel. He’s being God.

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for thinking You owe me explanations. Help me trust that Your will is better, even when I don’t understand it. Teach me to worship, not just when things go my way, but even when Your way feels hard. You are God, and I surrender to Your rule over every part of my life. Amen.
