Text: Luke 2:22-40
Introduction
Waiting can be difficult. We live in a fast-paced world where patience is often overlooked. However, the Bible teaches us that God works in His perfect timing. In Luke 2:22-40, we encounter two individuals, Simeon and Anna, who waited faithfully for the fulfillment of God’s promise—the coming of the Messiah. Their story teaches us how to wait on God with faith, worship, and expectation.
Faithful Waiting Requires Obedience (Luke 2:22-24)
Mary and Joseph followed God’s law by bringing Jesus to the temple. Their obedience reflects their trust in God’s instructions.
Lesson: Faithful waiting is not passive; it involves active obedience.
Application: Are we obeying God even when we don’t see immediate results?
Faithful Waiting Requires Expectation (Luke 2:25-35)
Simeon was a righteous and devout man, waiting for the “consolation of Israel.” The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would see the Messiah before his death.
When he saw Jesus, he recognized Him as the fulfillment of God’s promise.
He declared, “My eyes have seen your salvation” (v. 30).
He also prophesied that Jesus would bring both salvation and division.
Lesson: When we wait with expectation, God opens our eyes to His plans.
Application: Do we trust that God will fulfill His promises, even when it takes time?
Faithful Waiting Requires Worship and Devotion (Luke 2:36-38)
Anna, a prophetess, spent years worshiping, fasting, and praying in the temple. When she saw Jesus, she immediately gave thanks to God and shared the news with others.
Lesson: True faith is sustained through worship and devotion.
Application: How often do we seek God in worship while waiting for His promises?
Faithful Waiting Leads to Spiritual Growth (Luke 2:39-40)
After their temple visit, Jesus grew in wisdom and grace, fulfilling His divine purpose.
Lesson: God’s promises are not just about waiting but also about preparing.
Application: Are we using our waiting season for spiritual growth?
Conclusion
Simeon and Anna waited for years, but when the time came, they recognized Jesus. Today, we are also called to wait on God’s promises—whether for breakthroughs, answers to prayers, or His second coming.
Are we waiting with faith, worship, and expectation?
Are we ready to recognize when God fulfills His promises?
