Called to Shine, Even Through Suffering

Lenten Devotional – Day 36- Tuesday in Holy Week

Scripture Readings:

Isaiah 49:1-7

Psalm 71:1-8

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

John 12:20-36

As we enter deeper into Holy Week, today’s scriptures remind us that God's plan often unfolds in ways that seem weak to the world—but are full of purpose and power in His sight.

Isaiah 49:1-7 tells the story of the Servant of the Lord, chosen from the womb, formed by God for a great purpose. Yet the servant feels like their work is in vain. Can you relate? Sometimes, especially during Lent, we reflect and wonder if our spiritual efforts matter. But God says, “You are my servant… in whom I will be glorified.” Even when we feel hidden or small, God is working through us, preparing us to be a light to others.

Psalm 71:1-8 is a prayer of trust and hope. The psalmist says, “In you, O Lord, I take refuge.” No matter how hard the journey gets, especially in this holy season of sacrifice and reflection, we can run to God. He is our constant help from birth to now. Let this be our song today: “My mouth is filled with your praise.”

1 Corinthians 1:18-31 reminds us that the message of the cross may seem foolish to the world, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. The world values strength, pride, and intelligence—but God chooses the lowly to shame the mighty. As we continue our Lenten fast, we are reminded that humility is strength, and dependence on God is wisdom.

In John 12:20-36, Jesus speaks of His coming death. He compares Himself to a grain of wheat that must fall to the ground and die in order to produce fruit. He says, “Whoever serves me must follow me.” This is the heart of Lent—to follow Jesus, even in suffering, knowing that out of death comes life. And Jesus says, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself.”

Reflection:

Today, you may feel like the servant in Isaiah—tired, questioning your impact. But remember, God sees your heart and your quiet sacrifices. You are being prepared to shine His light. The journey to the cross may be hard, but it ends in glory.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for calling me to serve You, even when I feel weak or unnoticed. Help me to trust Your timing and purpose. Teach me to follow Jesus faithfully, knowing that through surrender comes fruitfulness. Fill my mouth with Your praise and my heart with Your peace. Amen.

Lenten Action:

Spend 10 minutes in quiet prayer today. Reflect on how your Lenten journey is producing fruit—even if you can't see it yet. Encourage someone who may feel discouraged by reminding them that God sees their faithfulness.
